Is it Time to Take the Plunge and Become Your Own Boss?

It is vital to always be striving to improve on yourself. But if you feel you have achieved everything you can professionally, you can quickly get stuck in a rut. It is times like these where you might want to consider a change of scenery.

But change can be scary, can’t it? The feeling of stepping out of your comfort zone and out into the unknown is intimidating. You might be doubting yourself, worried that if you leave now, you won’t be able to come back. But some of the best things in life are only achieved through taking a risk.

BEING YOUR OWN BOSS

Everyone dreams of being their own boss, having no one to answer to (except, perhaps your spouse), but so few go ahead and take the leap to do it. Starting your own business is a risk, but if you feel like you are no longer challenged in your current job, then why not go for it?

Founding a company comes with a lot of long days, research, and planning. But as long as you approach it sensibly, as opposed to just splashing out on office space and ping pong tables, you shouldn’t have any problems. Having detailed knowledge of your chosen industry will also streamline the process and avoid any unfortunate hiccoughs along the way.

HELPING OTHERS

But maybe the corporate world is no longer for you. Maybe you have always wanted to help the less fortunate; maybe you want to make a difference in the world like only helping others can.

You might already be volunteering at a local shelter and have been inspired, no longer wishing to sit behind a desk. Now, the opportunity is there to embark on obtaining a Master of Social Work qualification, which will allow you to work with vulnerable people who have been dealt a rough hand.

Helping others is one of the noblest of causes. The reward for aiding people battle through their lives and giving them advice and support is a feeling that is incomparable to much else in life.

DO WHAT YOU WANT

Of course, there’s no need to take this advice. You are your own person, and you can do whatever you want. If you want to drop everything and travel the world, go for it. If you want to relocate and build a new life for you and your family somewhere else, go for it.

Too often do we worry about money and time and everything in between, but the world is so much more than just those things. If you are feeling trapped, then find a way to change it. If you wait too long, you may end up regretting it.

No one can tell you what the right career change for you is except you. If there has ever been a time where someone has told you about your job, and you have sat there in awe and jealousy, then searching for opportunities that will give you similar freedom is the way to go. Don’t worry too much about the future, it distracts from the present, and at present, you want to do everything you can to be happy.
